1968 Williams Aqua Gun

Description: Aqua Gun, Williams #353, 2/68, electronic sound, black light. The game has three different sets of targets, the sea monster moves and is a turn-around target, the sharks are moving up and down targets, and the flying fish targets move around like they are flying through the water. The scenery and moving targets are all painted with florescent paint and glow under the black light. This game is a minimum 25 shots and maximum 35, based on the timer feature. The timer is adjustable from 40 to 60 units. If the player shoots 25 shots in under the timer amount, they get more shots (up to 35 total shots.) The timer is a nice feature of this game, and one Williams really did not use much after Aquagun.

This was the first Williams gun game with electronic sound. The sound board sits in the area below the coin door, behind the perferated masonite. The sound board makes three sounds, one low pitch, one mid pitch, one high pitch. The board is making these sounds continually from game start, but there are two small relays on the board. When a sound is needed, one of the relays pulls in for a short time, turning on the sound to the speaker. To get the third sound, both relays pull in at the same time. It's weird but that's how it works (during game play try holding in one of the sound board relays to hear the sound.) Note there's no background sound, and no gun shot sound. The gun does have a 120vac coil for gun recoil, which is a nice touch.

I have experimented with an MP3 player, adding background sound and gun fire sound. The background sound is aquatic sounding. The gun fire sound has a harpoon type sound. I'm using the Electronics123.com mp3 player. The board supports four sounds, but I'm only using the two. On the back of the board solder K1 terminals together, so at game start the 001.mp3 sound starts playing. Then put a new switch on the Cut-Off relay (which stays held a moment longer than the Trigger relay.) This new switch connects the K2 mp3 board terminals together for the 002.mp3 harpoon gun sound. Also the read.cfg file should contain the number "1". These three files fit on the mp3 board without additional memory (the board has 8meg built in.) The Electronics123 mp3 board instructions are here.

To power the MP3 board, used the yellow common wire and the gray/black wire (going to the shark bonus lights, schematic position 9a) on the make/break switch on the Hold relay. These two wires go to the AC lugs of a new bridge rectifier, with a 2200mfd capacitor across the DC lugs. This powers on the mp3 board with about 6vdc as soon as a game starts. Note I did connect a new speaker for this board, as it's not a good idea to use the original Williams sound board speaker for two different boards. I mounted a 4" speaker into the game's left (as facing the back) top pull handle, as it required very little cabinet work to make it fit. Note you can't use the right (as facing the back) cabinet pull handle spot - that's where the original sound board volume control is located!
