1959 Williams Pinch Hitter Deluxe

Description: Pinch Hitter, Williams #221, 4/59, two players, multiple pitches (fast and curve), game-to-game carry over feature - each grand slam lights a letter of the word "pinch hitter"; lighting the whole title or even just parts awards a replay. One of the few Williams pinch and bat games that gives strikes. The ball trough is segregated into three parts. If the player misses a pitch and ball goes down the center, it hits a strike switch. Three strikes equals an out. Also if the player bats the ball, but does not get a scoring hit, player automatically gets a strike - The strike option is a really neat feature of Pinch Hitter.

Game has a running man unit like most other Williams p&b games of the era. Light up red home run ramps, which are often damaged, give a home run. There's also a home run plastic (size 22.75" x 5.25") which is often damaged or shunken, since the ball actually hits this plastic coming off the home run ramps. Hence reproductions of this home run plastic are common.

The game has two pitches, fast and curve. The curve pitch uses a magnet under the formica playfield to dramatically curve the 7/8" ball to the outside. There is also a sort of "disc brake" on the pitching unit. This slows the curve ball pitch, and is adjustable via a spring nut on the pitching unit. If there was no slow down of the curve ball, in two player mode, there really would be no reason to ever use the fast pitch!

There is also a strange two out rule in this game... If the bases are loaded, and there's two outs, any hit scores a Grand Slam home run. In two player mode this really is a nice feature since it can allow the opposing team to come ahead and win the game.
