1940-1941 Keeney Texas Leaguer baseball

Description: Texas Leaguer, Keeney, 6/40, countertop game or floor model (if it has the original stand). Essentially the first ramp style baseball game (seemingly pre-dates the 1941 Scientific Batting Practic by a month or so.) Smaller version of the later 1958 Keeney League Leader baseball game and the 1965 Irving Kaye Batting Practice.

A small 3/8" ball bearing rolls down an incline and flys through the air. Player must try and bat the ball. The bat is fully mechanical, meaning the harder the player pulls the trigger, the harder the ball is batted. Play is challenging because the ball is so small, making for a very fun game. Scoring is pretty unique. If a ball is batted into a backboard run pocket, the ball is routed to the lower right scoring panel. Player must add up the number of balls to get their score. For example, two balls in the "5" scoring panel means 10 runs total. There are run pockets for 1,2,3,4 or 5 runs per properly hit balls. Game length is 15 (or 18) pitched balls, which are delivered automatically.

The game was inintially released in 1940, but was also made in 1941, with some modifications. Lights were added to the front sides of the game, making the playfield easier to see in dim locations. Also the ball count was changeable to 18 balls instead of 15 balls.

Of the four ramp style baseball games, Texas Leaguer is a really good game. The small footprint and fast action make it a really good playing game. Though it has no playfield manikins and does not track player infield position, this game is at the top of the four ramp style games.
