1940 C.R. Kirk Air Defense

Description: Air Defense, C.R. Kirk, 10/40, distributed by International Mutoscope. Very similar to Jet Pilot (Chicago Coin/Genco 5/59). Fly the model plane in a circle to altitude, a green light goes on, then land on the appropriate playfield marker/switch. 5000 points scored for each unvisited location. The first ones are easy, but as the game progresses, it gets a lot harder to get an unvisited locale (city.) The game is timed, so you have a limited time to get all the locations.

The original design for this game came from a $12 toy. An obsessive inventor/pilot Eldon Dale moved his toy airplane company from Kansas to California. There he produced a home version toy of what he eventually sold to CR Kirk for their Air Defense game. (Eldon Dale was the guy who designed the upright gun game using mirrors after WW2.) Dale patented the Dale Radioplane toy in 1938, and sold the rights to C.R. Kirk after that. Hence they turned his Radio Plane toy into a coin operated game.
